Next Day
Singapore is not what I expected (it seems more American than Asian). English is the official language, so all signs and people speak English. This place might as well be an American city (it reminds me of Orlando). Singapore is cleaner and safer than most American cities. Jill and I could live here (the weather would be more problematic than the culture shock). I visited Little India, in the heart of Singapore. The streets are lit up for a celebration called Deepavali (muslim New Year). People fill the streets which are narrow and crisscrossed with lights. The crowd's bright clothes make each city block look like a forest of changing leaves brilliant with color. In Little India, you do feel as though you're in an Asian City (unlike the rest of Singapore). I ate at this Indian restaurant where the food is served on banana leaves. The waiter saw I was a novice and recommeded that I stay away from some of the dishes (number one hot!). As far as I could tell, even the mild dishes were number one hot.
