Hill tribes live in the mountainous region of Thailand's north. Thais call them "chao khao" (mountain people). Each tribe keeps its own language, beliefs, and customs.
Akha women with a silver headdress and teeth blackened by betel nut juice; Paudaung woman with a neck elongated by copper coils; Hmong woman with ear lobes stretched by oversized earrings.
The Akha wear a headdress of dangling beads and silver money. The originally hail from Tibet and the practice animism and ancestor worship.
We came to the village without any accommodation options. We occupied a hut in the village center. As the only tourists around, we attracted a lot of passerby's.
The tribespeople let their hair down but didn't remove their neck rings.
