Khmer architecture draws from a basic theme: the idea of a temple mountain. A multi-tiered base of massive stonework represents the mountain's base, growing in height by steps to a blunt tower topped by a square sanctuary, an open door to the east and false doors to other cardinal points.
This is the temple of Angkor Wat, namesake of the region, a symbol like the EPCOT ball to Disneyworld.
An enormous kilometer long frieze surrounds the Angkor temple, depicting mythological scenes and triumphant battles.
Jungle pillars.
