This afternoon we arrived in Goa, a small state with a large reputation. So far, nothing about India could be called relaxing, but this is where Indians and visitors unwind. From chic beach resorts to backpacker hideouts, Goa provides a place to drop out. We start at Goa's capital, Panaji, where we find strong evidence of old colonialism. Catholic churches and tight alleyways crowded by Western-style buildings make us wonder if we've arrived in tropical Europe.
Panaji is the modern city that stands near the original Portugese colonial town of Old Goa, one of the first foreign colonial towns established on the sub-continent. Old Catholic churches remain.
