Next Day
One more day in San Jose, it's a nice city to take a stroll. People are friendly, cab rides are cheap, and despite a short recorded history, museums are worth a visit. Not much is known about ancient Costa Rica: no archaeological monuments or proof of a written language exist. Recorded history begins with Christopher Columbus (him again), who stayed for 17 days in 1502. The story goes that he was so impressed by the gold decorations worn by the natives that he called the country Costa Rica, 'the rich coast'.
Our guidebook calls San Jose's national theatre the country's most impressive building. When it was built in 1890 the snobs said San Jose finally became a city.
