Next Day
After visiting Nicaragua's three main cities it's time to go into the countryside and that means entering jungle and climbing volcanoes. We board a ferry which carries us over Lago de Nicaragua to the volcanic island of Ometepe. On the remote side of this island we stop in a camp at the foot of the volcano and swim in the warm and murky lake water.
Ometepe means "between two hills" in reference to the two volcanoes that rose from the lakebed and joined with a lava bridge. A gravel road runs around the figure eight shape of the island.
Swim in warm lake water. Don't listen to stories about piranha and crocodiles.
Birds add color to the island.
