The cruise ship docks and we pass through an almost non-existent customs check into the fortified port of Rhodes. This city impresses us with a complete medieval character - a crusader legacy, the Knights of St. John. Rhodes is the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe.
Rhodes once held one of the Seven Ancient Wonders, the Colossus, a giant statue that legend claims straddled the city's port. Nothing of this statue exists today.
The Knights of St John knew how to build fortifications. Two walls, at times over 50 feet high, enclose the Old town of Rhodes.
Go for a swim after sightseeing.
