Lawrence of Arabia spent years in Wadi Rum aiding his Arab friends in their revolt against the Turks. He loved it here and we agree it's a magnificent place. High and lonely jebels stand as sandstone monuments over the dunes. We woke before sunrise to enjoy the desert's calm silence, climb a sandstone cliff, and catch the sun light up sand and rock in brilliant hues of red, orange, and yellow. By mid-morning we waited for a bus out of Rum and passed time over tea (can't get away from drinking tea in Arabic countries) with members of the Desert Patrol. Distances are short in Jordan. In a few hours we reached the next site, Petra, which many people know from the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom."

The Treasury building, most famous rock hewn tomb in Petra. All of these buildings deal with death, not money. People call this tomb a 'treasury' because of the urn statue on top. Legend claimed that gold filled the urn. Bedouin shot holes into the facade looking for this gold, but they found none. |
