Next Day
Back in Addis Ababa, we stroll hectic streets and explore the Mercato, Africa's largest outdoor market. Friendly Ethiopians take time to help us find our way around the city. None of the streets are labeled so we use the compass for navigation. Stark Marxist monuments, leftovers from Ethiopia's socialist past, stand next to old churches and small apartment buildings. Mule carts struggle with new Toyota Land Cruisers for road space.
Lion of Juddah, symbol of Ethiopia. Don't ask me what it is, but it's depicted on money, stamps, and statues so it must be significant.
Ethiopian restaurant, the food served in festive sombreros.
Downtown Addis, more sprawl than tall.
