Oh my Gawd! our truck breaks down in the middle of the desert, a scenario imagined in nightmares. Prognosis: broken bearings have melded the right front wheel to the axle. Luckily our truck is equipped with a lot of heavy tools and a driver who knows not to take the advice of mechanically disinclined passengers. After four hours of heavy tanning, water guzzling, and percussive truck maintenance, we hitch a ride to Swakopmund. Our driver, Big Boy, remains in the desert to fix the truck. |

Big Boy uses none of our advice - good thinking. |
Only found in Namibia, the welwitschia is a slow growing conifer that lives over 1,000 years. |
