Back on our own again; our parents flew back home today while we stopped
for a day in Johannesburg. In the airport, we looked like a pair of rag-a-muffins
in our dusty, grimy clothes. Our hotel sent a 740i BMW to pick us up,
which made us look even shabbier. The hotel manager hurriedly showed us
our room to get us out of sight. It seemed we couldn't be much farther
away from the Masai village we saw only two days ago. We couldn't help
thinking of the Masai who lived in dung-walled huts next to luxury tourist
camps. A famous African quote says, "The Masai only care about cattle,
water, and women -- in that order." They're certainly tough, since a boy's
passage into manhood involves a circumcision without amnesia. Youch! |
